Bicycle Parking On Campus

Rules for Bicycle Parking | Parking Options

The bicycle parking facilities at the University of Oregon attempt to accommodate all users.

Even with the number of bicycle parking racks available, some people find themselves in such a hurry that they choose to park their bike near a tree or fence. This is bad idea for several reasons:
  • It is inconvenient for foot pedestrian traffic and sometimes hazardous
  • It is an obstacle for wheelchairs
  • It is likely not secured properly
  • It is against the rules

Please learn how to properly secure your bicycle and know the following rules to ensure that your bike will be there when you return.

Rules for Bicycle Parking

Park bicycles on the University campus only in areas specifically designed for bike parking.  These areas are designated by bike racks or other devices for parking bicycles or signs designating the space or area as a "Bicycle Parking Area":

(1) Bicycles may be parked or stored inside University buildings only in areas specifically designed and posted for bicycle parking.

(2) Bicycles may be stored or parked in any area or room that has been assigned to the registered bicycle owner, e.g., office, residence hall room or student family living quarters.

(3) Parked or stored bicycles that create a safety hazard will be removed and impounded. All other bicycles parked or stored in unauthorized locations will be cited and/or secured by a chain or other restraining device. If so secured, the citation tag will describe the procedure to be followed by owner to reclaim use of the bicycle.

See also Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR) 571-010-0090:

(a) University security officers or other personnel authorized to remove and impound bicycles shall not be liable to the owner of the bicycle or securing device for the cost of repair or replacement of the device;

(b) Owners of securing devices which have been damaged during the impounding process may appeal the impound fee to the Traffic Petitions Office, c/o Department of Public Safety. See OAR 571-010-0020;

(c) Bicycles abandoned for one month shall be subject to impoundment.

Bike Racks

hoop-style rack In general, we install bike racks in areas where bike riding is permitted.  A bike rack may not be located in front or near a building entrance for this reason.  The three bike racks pictured below have been approved by the Campus Planning Committee and meet the criteria for security, appearance and pedestrian safety.

Covered Bike Parking

covered bike parking Covered bike parking is very important in Oregon and it may be the most important facilities improvement that we can make on campus.

Bike Cages

bike cage The Onyx Bridge bike cage is available on a first come-first served basis.   The usage fee is $10 per term or $20 year.  Users are issued a personal code to access the cage.   The Department of Public Safety (DPS) manages registration of the cage and lockers.

Bike Lockers
