Bicycle Safety

In the State of Oregon, a person riding a bicycle has the same rights and responsibilities as a person driving a car.

Try to apply the concept in the following quote when riding your bike on or off campus:

Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles. -John Forester

When cyclists do not act as drivers of vehicles, here are some common behaviors - don't let this be you - you are putting yourself and others at risk of injury or death!
  • Disregard traffic signals (lights & stop signs)
  • Ride against the flow of traffic
  • Turn left from the far right hand side of the road
  • Not use lights at night
The fine for riding through a STOP sign or RED light on a bike is $115 - the same as in a car.
