October 11, 2005

Summary:  On Monday, October 10, 2005, the Eugene Police Department (EPD) and the Department of Public Safety (DPS) investigated a robbery and attempted theft near Johnson Hall on the University of Oregon campus.   This Public Safety Bulletin is intended to alert the campus community to the occurrence of this incident.  Anyone who may have information about this matter is encouraged to contact the Eugene Police Department Campus Detail at 346-2904 or the Department of Public Safety at 346-5444.

Incident Description:

Robbery II: October 7, 2005, 7:10 AM on the south sidewalk of 13^th Avenue just east of Johnson Hall.  An individual approached the victim and tried to grab the victim’s shoulder bag.  The suspect stated that he had a weapon without describing or displaying it.  The victim freed her bag from the suspect’s grasp, then walked quickly to her place of employment.  She did not observe the suspect’s direction of travel.  The victim telephoned the Department of Public Safety on October 8 at 1:20 AM to report the incident.

Suspect Description: White male adult, approximately 5’8” tall, 165 pounds, late 30s to early 40s in age, unshaven with brown hair and moustache, brown eyes, wearing a charcoal gray fleece jacket, tattered and torn blue jeans, and black shoes.

Action Being Taken:  Public Safety and Eugene Police have increased patrols in the area.

Recommended Action:  All students, faculty and staff who observe suspicious behavior or are approached in a threatening manner by any person while on campus are encouraged to report the incident immediately to the Department of Public Safety.  DPS can be reached by either activating a blue light telephone or by dialing 346-6666.   Persons reporting suspicious activities may also contact the Eugene Police Department by dialing 911.  Persons witnessing these incidents are reminded that physical description information is extremely important. 

Safety Tips:

• Trust your intuition.  If you feel unsafe or threatened, move to a safe environment.
• Look assertive and always be aware of your surroundings; avoid wearing headphones or other devices that limit your ability to hear while walking or driving.
• During the night hours, walk with a friend or coworker when possible.
• Avoid isolated areas of campus when possible and seek out well-lighted pathways if walking at night. 
• If you feel threatened or observe inappropriate or illegal behavior, contact DPS (Blue Light Phone or Dial 346-6666) or the Eugene Police Department (Dial 911)
