Q. What is the best browser in which to view
Safetyweb content?
A. The latest versions of
Internet
Explorer, Opera, or Mozilla
are ideal for browsing Safetyweb. All these browsers
provide adequate security features for filing secure online
forms. If you seek further information on Safetyweb
security, see the disclaimers
page. For further computing help, see the Computing
Center website.
Q. How do I find what I am looking for on
Safetyweb?
A.
- Safetyweb is organized into three main sections, Safety
Services & Policing, Parking
Services & Transportation, and General
Services & Building Security. Most
of the information located on our web site fits
into one of these three categories. Once in
the category of your choice, check the table of
contents. On most of the pages, there is a
navigation bar located on the left side of the
window.
- In the upper-right corner of each window is a
"Quick Links" pull-down menu, where you
can find commonly accessed pages.
- Try the Search Page.
You can easily access this under the Quick Links
menu.
- A comprehensive list of all available pages is
located in the Site Map.
This is accessible from the Quick Links menu.
- If you are having trouble getting the information
you need, please do not hesitate to contact the
Department of Public Safety via phone, (541)
346-5444, or e-mail. A list of Department
employees along with their areas of expertise is
located on the Contacts
Page.
Q. What is a ".pdf" file and how
can I view it?
A. A .pdf file is a Portable Document File
and can be viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader (free
download available). When a Department of Public
Safety form (available on Safetyweb) requires a signature,
we provide the form in .pdf format so that you can download
it, view it, print it, and mail it in or drop it off.
Campus maps are also provided
in .pdf format.

Q. What should I do if someone is
harassing me?
A. Contact our office, 346-5444, and speak
with an officer. A public safety officer can help you
assess the situation and offer suggestions to help resolve
the problem. It is better to notify our office and ask
for help then try to handle things alone.
Q. What should I do if I'm afraid to
walk across campus at night?
A. If walking around campus in the evening, it's
recommended that you walk with a friend and avoid dark
areas. Stay in well-lit
pathways closer to streets and main walk-ways.
Become familiar with where emergency
call box locations are. Don't walk alone, if you
can't find a friend to walk with then call the Assault
Prevention Shuttle or our office for an escort.

resources page.
Q. Is bicycle theft a problem on campus and do

Parking & Transportation
Related
Q. Is it okay to park at a broken meter?
I put money in and it didn't register time.
A. Parking is not permitted at broken meters even
if it didn't register time. If the meter device detects an
internal failure, a flashing circled P with a slash through
it will be displayed. This is the international symbol for
NO PARKING. Simply follow the instructions on the meter to
report that it is broken, and we will get right out to
repair it. You may also report broken University
meters on the Parking Meters
page.
Q. If space or lot says visitor parking only,
but a faculty/staff/student member of the UO community
doesn't have a parking permit, can they park there?
A. No -- visitor only parking means just that,
and students or faculty/staff members are not allowed to
park there. In order to park in a visitor parking
space, the car must display a valid visitor parking permit,
available from the Department of Public Safety or the information
kiosk.
Q. If I buy a parking permit, but then decide I
would rather ride my bike or ride the bus, can I get a
refund?
A. Basically, yes. If you return the permit to
DPS with 10 business days of purchase, you can get 100% of
your purchase price back. After 10 business days, you will
need to refer to the current UO Permit
Price and Refund Schedule for the amount you can
receive. Further information can be found on the Replacements
and Refunds page.
Q. How are parking funds spent?
A. Parking & Transportation is a
self-supporting auxiliary of the University. For information
on how those funds are spent, see to our Parking
& Transportation Funds Page.
Q. How can I protest a citation?
A. If you receive a citation you believe in
error or feel there are mitigating circumstances, you may
petition it. Go to the Parking
Petitions page for full details.
Q. How should I pay for my permit?
A. We accept cash, check, Visa, MasterCard,
or payroll deduction (this last for faculty/staff only).
Make checks payable to the University of Oregon.
Q. Can you tell me about permit prices for Fall
00-01?
A. Please see our Parking
Permit Prices and Refunds page.
Q. When do the year permits expire?
A. 1999-2000 Year permits expire September
30th of 2000. 2000-2001 Year permits expire September 30th
of 2001.
Q. What if I need a temporary permit?
A. Temporary parking permits are $2 a day.
There is a a new style of scratch-off temporary permit
available which can be purchased in advance and used
whenever needed -- a much simpler and
"user-friendly" option for those last-minute
changes in vehicle usage plans, or when you are running just
a little late and the car with the decal was left at home.
Q. What if my car with the decal is broken down
and in the shop for a couple of days?
A. If you have a parking permit decal on your
vehicle, but the vehicle is broken down or "in the
shop" so that you have to drive another, non-permitted
vehicle for a short time, you can receive free temporary
parking permits to cover those few days until your regular
vehicle is back on the road and usable. Just stop by the
Department of Public Safety in Straub Hall between the hours
of 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Mon-Fri to pick them up.
Q. What if I sell my car and forget to get my
permit off the bumper to bring it in?
A. Try to remember to peel off the permit and
bring it in (even if it's small pieces) for replacement --
we have to have these to satisfy the auditors. There is a
$5.00 replacement fee. If you need to replace your permit
decal, but you can't get it back (the bumper was destroyed,
you sold the car, etc.) simply come to the DPS front counter
and fill out an Affidavit for the lost permit, fill in your
new scan form, and get the replacement permit for $5.00.
Q. What are the DPS Kiosk hours (located in
front of Oregon Hall on 13th)?
A. Kiosk hours are 6:30 AM - 3:30 PM,
Mon-Fri, and 10:00AM - 4:00 PM, Sat.
Q. What if I wasn't chosen in the Housing Dept.
Lottery for an overnight parking permit, but I still want my
car available while I live on campus?
A. If a Housing resident student wishes to
purchase overnight parking and did not get issued a UO
overnight parking permit through the Housing lottery, please
have them call DIAMOND PARKING at 343-3733 -- they are a
private parking agency that may be able to help.
Q. For the first few days of classes, can I
park without a permit?
A. There is no grace period for the beginning
of school -- parking rules will be enforced (especially at
this most hectic of times when all of our patience and
cooperation is necessary to help us get the year started
well).
