RE: Parking Information and Motor Pool Update

Motor Pool Update

Many of you have been wondering about the status of the Eugene Motor Pool since its closure was announced earlier this summer. I had hoped to have more information by now, but I can give you this status update. UO and Oregon State University have been collaborating on arranging all the pieces needed to open a branch motor pool at the old DAS motor pool location. On Friday, September 11, 2009, a written proposal was given to members of a workgroup from the UO by OSU. The members of this group have been working on this issue since DAS announced the closure of the Eugene motor pool, and have recommended the UO accept the proposal made by OSU. We should know in a few days whether a Eugene motor pool will be operational.

Fall 2009 Move-In

The main move-in day for Housing will be on Thursday, September 24, 2009. We will be posting signs on 15th Avenue near Agate and Onyx Streets that 15th Avenue will be closed for parking except for 30 minute short term parking only. No faculty/staff will be allowed to park on 15th Avenue between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. that day. We encourage people who must drive to campus that day to park in Lots 17, 18, and 40 (near the Education HEDCO building) and in Lot 34 which includes the basketball courts which have been striped for use again in the fall term. There will be no reserved parking spaces issued in that lot. Check our website for a link to the campus map showing parking lot locations: http://safetyweb.uoregon.edu.

2009-10 Parking Fees

We have received many e-mails and phone calls about the increase in the parking fees for FY 2010. What many people don't know is Commuter Services (formerly known as Parking and Transportation) is an auxiliary fund at the UO. This means we are totally self-supporting. The fees and fines collected support the entire operation for commuter services which includes: staff salaries, maintenance of all parking lots, the University Access Shuttle (a free service), and bond debt for major parking improvements. The UO started paying bond debt for the new education lots in FY 2009 and will be making payments for the new underground parking garage in FY 2010, despite that lot being unavailable for use until sometime in FY 2011. The only way the UO can meet these financial obligations and responsibilities is through raising fees and fines.

Below is a fee schedule for all PAC 10 campuses, to give you an idea what other universities are charging. The only campus charging less than UO also has two to three times more available parking.

Note: Under each university name you will see four dollar amounts. The first amount is the fee charged for structure parking, the second amount is the fee charged for surface parking, the third amount is the fee charged for residence hall parking, and the fourth amount is the fee charged for reserved parking.

Construction Update

Construction is ongoing with the area of the Bean loading dock scheduled to reopen around the 17th of September. Beginning the week of September 29th, and continuing for about two months, there will be construction at the end of the Moss Street Lot 33, affecting the parking near the boundary to the arena. This will mean the west entrance to graduate village will be closed. Instead, residents will need to enter and exit off of 15th Avenue.

We had hoped to have our on-line permit sales available when we started selling the parking permits for 2009-2010. As with many things new, it won't be ready for another week or two but it is coming. I will be waiting to renew my permit so I can try the new system.

A new addition to the campus is car sharing. We have two cars from WeCar ready and parked on 15th Avenue fronting the Living Learning Center. Please visit our web-site for more information at http://safetyweb.uoregon.edu.
