Glossary

  • Assault (Aggravated)
    An unlawful attack by one person upon another where either the offender displays a weapon or the victim suffers obvious severe or aggravated bodily injury involving apparent broken bones, loss of teeth, possible internal injury, severe laceration or loss of consciousness.

  • Arson
    Any willful or malicious burning or attempt to burn, with or without intent to defraud, a dwelling house, public building, motor vehicle or aircraft, personal property of another, etc.

  • Assault (Simple)
    Assaults and attempted assaults where no weapon is used and which do not result in serious or aggravated injury to the victim.

  • Burglary
    The unlawful entry of structure to commit a felony or a theft. Attempted forcible entry is included.

  • Counterfeiting
    Making, altering, uttering, or possessing, with intent to defraud, anything false in the semblance of that which is true. Attempts are included.

  • Drugs (Abuse Violations)
    State and/or local offenses relating to the unlawful possession, sale, use, growing, and manufacturing of narcotic drugs. The following drug categories are specified: opium or cocaine and their derivatives (morphine, heroin, codeine); marijuana; synthetic narcotics--manufactured narcotics that can cause true addiction (Demerol, methadone); and dangerous non-narcotic drugs (barbiturates, Benzedrine).

  • Driving Under the Influence
    Driving or operating any vehicle or common carrier while drunk or under the influence of liquor or narcotics.

  • Drunkenness
    Offenses relating to drunkenness or intoxication. Excluded is "driving under the influence."

  • Drugs (Sale and Possession Violations)
    The unlawful cultivation, manufacture, distribution, sale, purchase, transportation or importation of any controlled drug or narcotic substance. Or, the unlawful manufacture, sale, purchase, possession or transportation of equipment or devices used for preparing and/or taking drugs or narcotics (drug paraphernalia).

  • Embezzlement
    Misappropriation or misapplication of money or property entrusted to one's care, custody, or control.

  • Forgery
    Making, altering, uttering, or possessing, with intent to defraud, anything false in the semblance of that which is true. Attempts are included.

  • Fraud
    Fraudulent conversion and obtaining money or property by false pretense. Included are confidence games and bad checks, except forgeries and counterfeiting.

  • Familial Offenses
    Nonsupport, neglect, desertion, or abuse of family and children.

  • Fondling (Forcible)
    The touching of the private body parts of another person for the purpose of sexual gratification, forcibly and/or against the person's will; or not forcibly and/or against the person's will where the victim is incapable of giving consent because of his/her youth of because of his/her temporary permanent mental of physical incapacity.

  • Gambling
    Promoting, permitting, or engaging in illegal gambling.

  • Hate Crime
    Any crime reported under one of the listed offense types, and any other crime involving bodily injury reported to local police agencies or to a campus security authority, that manifest evidence that the victim was intentionally selected because of the victim's actual or perceived race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or disability.

  • Incest
    Non-forcible sexual intercourse between person who are related to each other within the degrees wherein marriage is prohibited by law.

  • Larceny
    The unlawful taking, carrying, leading, or riding away of property from the possession or constructive possession of another. Examples are thefts of bicycles or automobile accessories, shoplifting, pocket-picking, or the stealing of any property or article which is not taken by force and violence or by fraud. Attempted larcenies are included. Embezzlement, "con" games, forgery, worthless checks, etc., are excluded.

  • Liquor Laws
    State and/or local liquor law violations, except "drunkenness" and "driving under the influence." Federal violations are excluded.

  • Liquor Laws (Violations)
    The violation of laws or ordinances prohibiting the manufacture, sale, purchase, transportation, possessing or use of intoxicating alcoholic beverages.

  • Murder
    The willful (non-negligent) killing of one human being by another.

  • Manslaughter (Negligent)
    The killing of another person through negligence.

  • Non-Campus Building or Property
    (1) Any building or property owned or controlled by a student organization that is officially recognized by the institution; or (2) any building or property owned or controlled by an institution that is used in direct support of, or in relation to , the institution's educational purposes, is frequently used by students, and is not within the same reasonably contiguous geographic area of the institution.

  • On-Campus
    (1) Any building or property owned or controlled by an institution within the same reasonably contiguous geographic area and used by the institution in direct support of, or in a manner related to, the institution's educational purposes, including residence halls; and (2) any building or property that is within or reasonably contiguous to the area identified in paragraph (1) of the definition, that is owned by an institution but controlled by another person, is frequently used by students, and supports institutional purposes (such as a food or other retail vendor).

  • On-Campus Residential Facilities
    This definition is a subset of the locations that are defined under "on campus". The crime statistics that are reported in this column are also included in the column under "on campus"; they are not additional incidents.

  • Prostitution (Commercialized Vice)
    Sex offenses of a commercialized nature, such as prostitution, keeping a bawdy house, procuring, or transporting women for immoral purposes. Attempts are included.

  • Public Property
    All public property, including thoroughfares, streets, sidewalks, and parking facilities, that is within the campus, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. For example, incidents that occurred on the east side of Alder Street between 14th and 18th Avenues would be reported under this column; but incidents that occurred in private housing on the west side of Alder would not be included. If the incident occurred in an off-campus fraternity or sorority, it would be reported under the column "Non-campus building or property."

  • Rape (Forcible)
    The carnal knowledge of a person, forcibly and/or against the person's will; or not forcibly or against the person's will where the victim is incapable of giving his/her temporary permanent mental or physical incapacity (or because of his/her youth).

  • Robbery
    The taking or attempting to take anything of value from the care, custody, or control of a person or persons by force or threat of force or violence and/or by putting the victim in fear.

  • Rape (Statutory)
    Non-forcible sexual intercourse with a person who is under the statutory age of consent.

  • Stolen Property (Buying, Receiving, Possessing)
    Buying, receiving, and possessing stolen property, including attempts.

  • Sex Offenses (Except Rape (Forcible), Prostitution, and Commercialized Vice)
    Statutory rape and offenses against chastity, common decency, morals, and the like. Attempts are included.

  • Sodomy (Forcible)
    Oral or anal sexual intercourse with another person, forcibly and/or against the person's will; or forcibly or against the person's will where the victim is incapable of giving consent because of his/her youth or because of his/her temporary permanent mental of physical incapacity.

  • Sexual Assault with an Object
    The use of an object or instrument to unlawfully penetrate, however slight, the genital or anal opening of the body of another person, forcibly and/or against that person's will or not forcibly against the person's will where the victim is incapable of giving consent because of his/her youth or because of his/her temporary permanent mental or physical incapacity.

  • Sex Offenses (Forcible)
    Any sexual act directed against another person, forcibly and/or against that person's will; or not forcibly or against the person's will where the victim is incapable of giving consent.

  • Sex Offenses (Non-Forcible)
    Unlawful, non-forcible sexual intercourse.

  • Theft (Motor Vehicle)
    The theft or attempted theft of a motor vehicle. A motor vehicle is self-propelled and runs on the surface and not on rails. Specifically excluded from this category are motorboats, construction equipment, airplanes, and farming equipment.

  • Vandalism
    Willful or malicious destruction, injury, disfigurement, or defacement of any public or private property, real or personal, without consent of the owner or persons having custody or control.

  • Weapons (Carrying, Possessing, etc.)
    All violations of regulations or statues controlling the carrying, using, possessing, furnishing, and manufacturing of deadly weapons or silencers. Included are attempts.

  • Weapons (Violations)
    The violation of laws or ordinances prohibiting the manufacture, sale, purchase, transportation, possession or use of firearms, cutting instruments, explosives, incendiary devices or other deadly weapons.
