Crime Reporting
All
crimes, no matter how small they seem, are important
enough to be reported to the Department of Public
Safety or the Eugene Police Department. Promptly
reporting crimes assists law enforcement officers in
the investigation and apprehension of the perpetrator(s).
Working with the Eugene
Police Department, the Department of Public Safety
submits incident reports to the Area Informational
Records System (AIRS), a law enforcement database
system that agencies in Lane County access for records
management. Serial numbers of stolen property
from campus are reported through the National Crime
Information Center.
Faculty, staff and students need to be aware of
crime in order to take the necessary precautions to
avoid becoming a victim. The Department of Public
Safety provides The
Oregon Daily Emerald, an independent student
newspaper, and other media with information on criminal
activity reported on campus. Media
Logs, containing up-to-date information, are sent
out via electronic mail and are also posted on our web
site. Notices and safety bulletins are
distributed around the campus as needed.
To Report a Crime
If the crime is in progress on campus, call the DPS
at 346-6666. Non-emergency assistance and
information is available by calling DPS at (541)
346-5444. You may also come into the Department
of Public Safety and Report in person.
Online Reporting
The Department of Public Safety provides online
non-emergency crime reporting for the campus community.
Within 24 hours of submitting an online criminal
activity report, and within 48 hours of submitting an
online bicycle theft report, a Public Safety Officer or
Eugene Police Officer will contact you to verify the
report details and ask any question if necessary.
Please provide proper contact information is to ensure
that the report can be filed.
Online reports are not official reports. Only
the printed copy, signed by the reporting officer and
containing a Department or Eugene Police issued case
number, are considered the official copy. These
online report forms are intended to facilitate the
report process by providing officers with pertinent
information about the incident in a timely manner.
An official report will be prepared and submitted by
the officer through the reporting system.
Silent
Watch
Anonymously
report non-urgent suspicious conditions or
criminal activity. This report program
was created in an effort to involve campus
community members in community policing.

Theft
Report
bicycle theft from campus locations. Upon
submission of your report, a Public Safety
Officer will contact you with 48 hours to
confirm details. For off-campus bicycle
thefts, contact the Eugene Police Department
at 682-5121 (non-emergency number).
Criminal
Activity
Report
minor criminal activity that has occurred on
campus and is not currently in progress, such
as drugs, theft, fraud, and assault. Upon
submission of report, a Public Safety Officer
will contact you with 24 hours to confirm
details. For off-campus crimes, please report
these directly to the Eugene Police
Department at 682-5121 (non-emergency
number).
Sex Offense Reporting
When a sex offense is committed, it is imperative
that the victim-survivor file a report as soon as
possible with the Department of Public Safety or the
Eugene Police Department. Preserving any physical
evidence is necessary for successful investigation,
arrest, and prosecution of the perpetrator(s). If the
victim-survivor requires support services, DPS
coordinates with the Office
of Student Life, the Office
of Human Resources, the Student
Health Center, the University
Counseling Center, and other community resources.
After an assault, DPS can provide appropriate academic
and living changes, counseling services, employee
assistance programs, and support from the victims'
assistance program at the district attorney's office.
If another student commits the offense, the
victim-survivor can report it to the Office of Student
Life instead of the Eugene Police Department. The
conduct coordinator then investigates the complaint and
pursues sanction under the University of Oregon Code of
Student Conduct. Possible sanctions include expulsion,
suspension, negative notation on academic record,
disciplinary probation, restitution, community service,
loss of privileges, conduct reprimand, suspended
sanction, and revocation of degree. As part of the student
conduct code adjudication process, the accuser and
the accused are entitled to have others present during
a campus disciplinary proceeding. Additional
information concerning the conduct code process can be
obtained from the Office
of Student Life. |
