Notice of requirements
for Finders of Property
ORS 98.005: Rights
and Duties of finder of money or goods
(1) If any person finds money or goods
valued at $100 or more, and if the owner of the money
or goods is unknown, such person, within 10 days after
the date of the finding, shall give notice of the
finding in writing to the county clerk of the county in
which the money or goods was found. Within 20 days
after the date of the finding, the finder of the money
or goods shall cause to be published in a newspaper of
general circulation in the county a notice of the
finding once each week for two consecutive weeks. Each
such notice shall state the general description of the
money or goods found, the name and address of the
finder and final date before which such goods may be
claimed.
(2) If no person appears and
establishes ownership of the money or goods prior to
the expiration of three months after the date of notice
to the county clerk under subsection (1) of this
section, the finder shall be the owner of the money or
goods.
The Department of Public Safety has and maintains
Lost and Found property. We store only property of
value. To claim an item that
you feel is your property, you will need to be able to
prove ownership (documents or some type of proof). If
that is not possible you will be required to describe
the property, date/time it was lost, and location where
the property was lost. You will need to come to Public
Safety to pick up the property.
By turning property into DPS, you
will lose all rights to claim the property at a later
date and time.
Please bring a piece of photo identification or a
valid Driver's License with
you to the Public Safety office. We are
located at 1319 E.
15th Ave. on the U of O campus during the hours of 8:00
A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday. Contact the
front counter and someone will
assist you.
Storage Policy: Property that is turned
into DPS that is of little or no value (Clothing,
umbrella's, empty backpacks, etc…) will be turned
over to the EMU Break. All other lost and found items that are
of value will be processes
and lodged in our Property Storage cage. We will hold
property for a minimum of 30 days
after which we properly dispose of the property.
Bicycles will be held for a minimum
of 90 days, after which they will be donated.
ID Policy: All University of Oregon IDs
will be turned in to Photo ID at the EMU. All driver's license will be returned to the
Motor Vehicles Dept. where the license came from.
Passports and Social Security cards will also be
returned to their respective agencies.
Athletic Events: The Dept. of Athletics turns
over any property they find after an athletic event to
DPS. DPS will process and lodge all property of value
for 30 Days after which we will properly dispose of the
property.
