Non-Emergency Building Evacuation
Disabled individuals may encounter problems exiting a
building when an elevator is temporarily
out-of-service. To assist in these situations, the
University of Oregon has purchased two Evac-U-Tracs,
gravity-assisted devices that assist in the safe
transport of a person down a stairwell. The Department
of Environmental Health and Safety and the Department
of Public Safety can deploy these devices upon request.
If a person should need assistance navigating a
stairwell, they can call our dispatch center and an
officer will deliver an Evac-U-Trac to the location.
All Public Safety officers have been trained to use the
device.
The Evac-U-Trac is intended for use in
"non-emergency" evacuations. Under
life-threatening conditions, such as during a building
fire or medical emergency, the Department of Public
Safety would rely on the expertise of the Eugene Fire
Department to extricate a person from the building. |
